Overview
Perugia is located about 100 miles north of Rome. The historic center of the city is a true medieval village with cobbled streets, Gothic mansions and quiet churches that seems to have changed little in the last 400 years. The city is full of impressive history and architecture, but is also modern with two historic universities that welcome students from around the world.

Taking a stroll through the city, you’ll weave along the 2.5 mile dell’Acquedotto, a path that served as an aqueduct during the Roman era.

Hospital Overview
Azienda Ospedaliera di Perugia – Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia
The Azienda Ospedaliera di Perugia is a premier healthcare institution that covers a variety of specialties including cardiology, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. Its multidisciplinary approach ensures holistic patient care, from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation, leveraging state-of-the-art technology and methods to deliver optimal healthcare. It is also an academic teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Perugia, providing a learning environment for medical students, interns, and residents.
The Hospital of St. Maria della Misericordia in Perugia was founded in 1303 by a Brotherhood to serve the poor and innocent. Initially located near St. Ercolano’s church, it was supported by community donations and faced financial challenges. The hospital became a key medical education and surgical innovation center by the 1800s. It moved, expanded its facilities and now stands as a modern healthcare facility.
Chocolate
Perugia is famous for chocolate – they even hold an annual Eurochocolate festival (typically in October). It’s one of the largest chocolate festivals in the world, during which the entire city smells of chocolate. The Perugina Chocolate Factory is located in the city center. You’ll want to each chocolate the whole time you are in this amazing city!
Excursions
Our excursions are designed to offer a deeper look into your host culture, for both the educational benefit and the enjoyment of exploring a new place with others who share your interests in travel and medicine. Excursions range from historical tours to culinary and cultural explorations.
Your Site Manager will inform you of the excursions they have planned during your program orientation. If you make travel plans outside of your city for a weekend and it conflicts with the events your Site Manager has planned, notify your Site Manager several days in advance so that they can plan accordingly.
Clinical Experience that Stands Out to Schools
Medical schools want 3 things: healthcare exposure, GPA/MCAT, and certain competencies. Uniquely, “360 Shadowing” gives you the best version of the 1st, frees you to focus on the 2nd, and cultivates/shows the 3rd to medical school admissions.
Funding Your Future
The cost of Atlantis isn’t too dissimilar from the cost of many study abroad programs that you may find. And we’re here to help: from our extensive fundraising guide to flexible payment plans and financing options, we make the process simple and easy, allowing you to focus on what really matters.
Bring a Friend
Consider bringing a friend to the same program you’re applying to. Although the vast majority of Atlantis alumni have gone on programs without knowing someone in their cohort, bringing a friend allows your experience to be shared in a unique way, while still allowing you one of the benefits of Atlantis: meeting new pre-health friends from across the country. Consider sharing this idea with your friends.
