Q&A

When will the course be available to add to my Atlantis experience?

For select institutions, the course is available now. For many other institutions, it will be available to add to your Atlantis experience in the coming months and you can express your interest when speaking with your Admissions Representative. If you’ve already enrolled, or are planning to enroll soon, you may have the option to add it after enrollment.

How do I access the course?

This course is hosted in CEA CAPA’s online learning management system, Canvas. Whether you’re used to Brightspace, Blackboard, or other online learning platforms, Canvas provides an intuitive space for online learning.

What is the course about?

The course is specifically designed to complement the international shadowing experience. It provides an introduction to international healthcare systems and patient care to support the shadowing experience abroad. Students will learn to articulate the differences between the host country and US medical systems, work culture, and approaches to care. The course will touch on patient interactions, ethical factors, cultural considerations, comparative healthcare systems, and educational requirements for medical professions in the host country.

Will I receive a transcript?

Yes. Following successful completion of the course, you will receive a transcript issued by the University of New Haven, accredited by NECHE.

Can I get a syllabus for credit approval?

Absolutely! Click here to view the full course syllabus.

Is the course self-paced?

The course is fully asynchronous, but is paced along a set structure. This means that although you have the freedom to complete the course during times that are best for you, there will be readings and assignments that must be completed by particular deadlines. The course is designed for maximum flexibility while also adhering to standards that will provide a robust academic experience. Expect to commit about 8 hours per week to completing the course.

Will there be an instructor?

Yes! Although course content will be delivered asynchronously, meaning that you can complete your course at whatever time of day works for you, there will be a faculty member assigned to each section to oversee student progress, engage with students, answer questions, grade assignments, and so on.

Can I transfer credits to my home institution?

This course is fully recognized and approved as a 3-credit course through CEA CAPA’s NECHE-accredited school of record, University of New Haven. Whether your school will allow you to transfer credit will depend on their policies, but taking this course would be similar to taking a course on a study abroad program or at a community college. Talk to your home institution to learn more about their transfer credit policies.

When can I complete the course?

Depending on the timing of your program, you will have at least 30 days to complete the pre-departure course content and 30 days after your program end date to finish the course. Most of the course content must be completed prior to departure, because the content you learn is designed to be relevant to your shadowing experience. Once your program has concluded, you will have final content to complete, which will allow you to reflect on the ways that your experience shadowing abroad connects back to the earlier academic topics. On a day-to-day basis, you will be able to complete the course content according to your own schedule.

Will the course require me to log in and complete work while abroad?

No, although you may choose to do so. The course is designed to be completed before and after your time abroad, to eliminate disruptions to your study abroad. While overseas, you’ll be focusing on your shadowing experience! The reflective component of the course will require you to log in once you’ve returned, to consider how the course content connects to what you experienced while shadowing. That said, you will continue to have access to the course during your shadowing program, so you may find that you want to engage with other students through Canvas to compare notes and discuss your experiences.

What does the course cost?

The course fee is $750, a great value compared to tuition for 3 credits at most universities.
