Praia is the capital city of Cape Verde, which is off the coast of West Africa. Once a Portuguese colony, Cape Verde has been independent since 1975 and has since undergone a demographic boom, mainly out of Praia. This program is 3.5 weeks long, and is unique in that the first half week will be spent in Lisbon, Portugal for some cultural fun before the group makes the trip together to Cape Verde. This way, students will get to see two countries, and learn about the culture that colonized Cape Verde and so heavily influenced its culture.
Praia is a beautiful beach town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The old town center is known as the "Plateau" by locals, as it sits above sea level and has historically protected the town from flooding and attacks from pirates. There are several popular beaches accessible to visitors, such as Quebra, Canela, and Praínha, along with scattered shops, restaurants, and antique neighborhoods. One of the safest countries in Africa, Cape Verde attracts more visitors each year for its beaches, food, and affordable cost of living.

Hospital Dr. Agostinho Neto is located on the southeastern edge of the tropical island of Santiago, right in the middle of the historic Plateau neighborhood. It serves the capital city of Praia and is the largest hospital in the country. The hospital provides its patients with a wide array of services typical of a modern hospital. Since its founding during the Portuguese colonial period, the hospital has striven to keep up with modern standards and international quality indicators (ISO), often with the help of international investment.
